Whenever the police receive a call about an accident at 6:30 am, they fear the worst. On Monday, August 10, the police received such a call. A crash involving 2 vehicles was reported early in the hours of Monday morning. The crash took place on Highway 79 North between the Hampton Inn and Car-Mart.
When the police arrived at the scene, they found a Chevy Colorado SUV as well as a Freightliner log truck. The log truck did not have any logs on the truck at the time of the accident.
Apparently, the Freightliner was traveling in the Northbound lanes of the highway when a vehicle pulled out of a private driveway. This driveway was estimated to be in the middle of the Hampton Inn and Car-Mart.
The driver of the log truck didn’t see the car come out of the drive and hit the car. The driver of the Chevy Colorado and one of their passengers were seriously injured in the crash. By the time the police arrived at the scene, both victims had passed away from their injuries. The Columbia County Coroner, Randy Reed, pronounced both of the young people dead at the scene. Both victims were under the age of 18.
A second passenger in the Chevy Colorado was taken to Magnolia General Medical Center. There has been no update on their condition. The driver of the Freightliner was not injured in the crash. His name has not yet been released.
The next of kin of both victims were notified shortly after the crash. The names of these minor victims have not been released to the public.
