When we send our kids off to school on the bus every morning, we expect them to be safe. And, truth be told, 99% of the time they are. School bus drivers, for the most part, take their jobs very seriously. They know that they have precious cargo on their vehicle. Sometimes, however, other drivers are negligent and end up causing a school bus accident. This was the case in Lawrence County this week.
On Tuesday morning, 43-year old Jeremy Parmer was driving his Hoxie school bus down Highway-63. He was in the Southbound lanes when a dump truck rear-ended him. The bus was trying to turn onto County Road 703 at the time of the crash.
The dump truck was driven by 31-year old Houston Franks.
There were 7 kids on the bus at the time of the accident. One was airlifted to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis. Another student was transported there by ambulance later. They were both seriously injured. However, they are expected to make a fully recovery.
Five other children and both drivers were taken to Jonesboro Hospital with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries. None of the children’s names have been released, for obvious reasons.
The police are still investigating the crash. They haven’t indicated that impairment had anything to do with the accident. They also haven’t confirmed what company the dump truck belonged to.
Thankfully, everyone is expected to be okay. That’s all that really matters in a situation like this – knowing that all of the kids will make a full recovery. However, the families of the victims will certainly have a potential claim for damages here.
