Arkansas Spin E-Scooter Accident Attorneys
Riding e-scooters and e-bikes is fun, useful, entertaining, innovative, and a nifty way to get where you are going fast, but most of all, they are inexpensive to use and becoming a valuable alternative mode of travel. However, if you are involved in an accident and fall on your face, the news about healing is not always good. Spin e-scooter riders can fracture their faces, noses, heads, jaw, and other extremities, not to mention the possibility of damaging your spinal cord.
Injuries sustained in an e-scooter accident can be exceedingly grim and in some instances, fatal. Be sure you know the rules of the road to ride a Spin e-scooter, use a helmet, read the rules and find out the speed limit, travel safely and park it properly, or dock it, in a designated location.
If you have been involved in a Spin e-scooter accident, the Law Office of Jason M. Hatfield know how much you are hurting, and are worried about the bills piling up, about going back to University classes or work, and whether or not you are going to heal properly.
Common Types of Injuries Sustained From Arkansas Electric Scooter Accidents
The most common injury arising from being involved in an e-scooter accident is a head injury, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) National Library of Medicine.
- Multiple Body Injuries – Such as pelvic fractures, dislocations of the ribs, back, neck, or shoulders, solid organ injury, spinal fractures/injuries, rib fractures, and torso trauma.
- Extremity Injuries – Soft tissue trauma, dislocations, fractured bones, and upper or lower extremity fractures or dislocations. Hip fractures and open fractures. Many of these injuries require hospitalization and/or surgical intervention.
- Traumatic Brain Injuries – Approximately 30 percent of e-scooter riders sustain neck and head trauma, neck fractures, and skull, and face fractures, including broken and dislocated jaws. There are also soft tissue injuries, serious dental damage, concussions, and intracranial hemorrhaging.
- Facial Injuries – Facial injuries can be devastating, as can other extremity injuries, such as broken or crushed bones, dislocations, serious road rash, traumatic brain injuries, concussion, and possible paralysis. It’s a high price to pay for a short, fun ride.
Injuries sustained in an e-scooter accident can be profoundly serious and life-altering and take months or years to heal. Main Causes of Spin E-Scooter Injuries
Riding an e-scooter can be dangerous. The reasons include the following:
- E-scooters are left in unsafe locations. This is a tripping hazard.
- E-scooters are not properly maintained or regularly inspected.
- Being hit by a car or hitting a vehicle.
- E-scooters’ rate of speed and complexity has evolved, and the chance of more serious injuries in an accident rises.
- E-scooter safety precautions are not in line with its newer ability to move faster.
- E-scooters are for one rider. Second, riders and children are riding them.
- E-scooter riders rarely wear helmets or know the local laws.
- Scooter industry regulation is not robust.
- Poor road conditions.
- Many e-scooter renters do not have experience riding them.
The Aftermath of an E-Scooter Accident
While e-scooters are fun, if a rider is involved in an accident, the injuries sustained can be extremely serious and in some instances, fatal. Of particular concern are traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and severe damage to the face, jaw, neck, and head. It is a proven fact, thanks to research, that using an e-scooter has increased the incidence of TBI.
In a published article in NIH National Library of Medicine, National Center for Biotechnology Information, a case study in 2022 reviewed e-scooter crashes and severe TBI. The results indicated injuries sustained were significantly devastating.
In the study, 19 patients were reviewed and studied. Thirteen of them fell from a scooter and 6 were injured as the result of a collision. The most frequent injuries seen with cerebral patterns, craniofacial fractures, and cervical spine injuries. Of the 19 patients, 12 required an intracranial pressure monitor, and six needed a decompressive hemicraniectomy.
Decompressive craniectomy is the removal of a piece of bone from the skull to reduce intracranial pressure. Most of the patients reviewed in this study were discharged to acute rehabilitation. However, four of the patients died of primary injuries.
The study’s conclusion suggests that a TBI sustained in an e-scooter accident is associated with elevated morbidity and is likely underdiagnosed. This may relate to the relative newness of the phenomenon of e-scooter riding. With the introduction of more e-scooter brands and types, the level of injuries is expected to rise.
Personal Injuries and Spin Scooters
Spin scooters may be ridden anywhere in Fayetteville. They must be left in specific locations, such as a section at Lake Fayetteville, areas along the Razorback Greenway, a section close to Gulley Park, and all designated locations downtown.
In 2019 the Arkansas General Assembly passed Act 1015, the Electric Motorized Scooter Act. At the Act’s core, it allowed up to 1,000 e-scooters in the city, with each only doing a maximum speed of 15 mph.
